Pres Obama to clearly lay out Iraq, Syria strategy

The White House says the goal of President Obama's speech later this week is to clearly lay out why fighting the Islamic State matters.

President Obama has not ruled out increased military action, but he has promised that American troops will not be figting on the ground in Iraq or Syria.

The U.S. military confirms it has now conducted 148 airstrikes in Iraq, the most recent around the Hadita dam and one by Irbil.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest says right now President Obama has all the authorization he needs for U.S. Central Command to continue its operations.

Immigration reform delayed again

U.S. President Barack Obama is delaying further work on legislation and executive orders to address the nearly 11 million living in the United States illegally until late in the year.

When the decision was announced, the upcoming mid-term elections in November were cited as the likely reason, that politics got in the way of immigration reform.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest insits, the American president wants immigration reform to be done right.

KERRY TO GO ON COALITION BUILDING TRIP TO JORDAN AND SAUDI ARABIA

US Secretary of State John Kerry is heading to Jordan and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday on a "coalition building trip" to degrade the Islamic State.

US State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said Mr. Kerry will discuss ways to combat ISIL and improve security in the Middle East with Jordanian and Saudi Arabian officials.

The State Department is also "actively pursuing" opportunities for the Secretary to meet with other regional leaders during his trip.

Ms. Psaki said "more than forty" countries have so far contributed to the effort in Iraq - some publicly and some privately. 

State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki also said there are varying ways in which countries can contribute to the fight against ISIL.

Controlled explosion carried out at Luton airport

Police in Britain have carried out a controlled explosion after a suspicious package was found at Luton Airport, just north of London. 

Hundreds of staff and passengers were evacuated after the discovery.  Incoming flights are being diverted.  From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Harvard University receives $350 million donation

Harvard University is set to receive a donation of $350 million to
it's School of Public Health.

The cash injection comes from Hong Kong billionaire Gerald Chan's
charity, to help fight challenges to global health.

US Military Initiates Major Response to Ebola

The US military has begun a major ramp up in assistance in combatting the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Aid organizations have warned that without a major increase in international assistance, the outbreak will become uncontrollable.

Prince William says he's thrilled by the pregnancy news


Prince William, the heir to the British throne says he's thrilled that he and his wife are expecting a second child. 

The Duchess of Cambridge is not yet 12 weeks pregnant but a public announcement came early as severe morning sickness means she had to cancel some public engagements.  She is being treated by doctors at Kensington Palace although was hospitalized with the condition during her first pregnancy.

The new baby will be a brother or sister for 14 month old year old Prince George and will become fourth in line to the British throne. 
 
Prince William spoke briefly to reporters during a visit to Oxford University.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their second child, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is said to be delighted with the news.

Moscow plans retaliation against EU sanctions

As the European Union readies further sanctions against Russia, Moscow is preparing steps in retaliation.

It's likely to affect air travel, with Russia banning foreign airlines from using the country's airspace.

Pro-Russian rebels free 1200 hostages in eastern Ukraine

Pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine have released 1200 people captured during their insurgency against Ukrainian government forces, says Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko.

The release follows a ceasefire agreed on Friday, part of which included the exchange of prisoners on both sides.

Luton airport evacuated after suspicious package found

Luton Airport, which lies on the outskirts of London, has been evacuated after a suspicious item was discovered in the security search area.

Irish Cardinal linked to clerical sex abuse scandal resigns

The Vatican announced on Monday it has accepted the resignation of the leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, whose tenure has been marred by clerical child sex abuse scandals.
Brady had resisted calls to resign in the past over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse, and says he has chosen to retire now as he is 75.

Scotland Independence Polls Neck and Neck

Many British newspapers carry the headline "Ten Days to save the Union" Monday.... 

after opinion polls show voters in Scotland evenly divided over whether to to vote for independence from the United Kingdom on September 18th.

EU set to adopt further sanctions against Russia

The European Union is expected to continue with it's plan to adopt further sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis - despite a ceasefire on the ground which appears to be holding.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the situation fluid but it's expected the measures will still be imposed.

Germany posts record trade surplus

The German economy posted a record trade surplus of 22.2 billion euros for the month of July. 

That has led to optimism that Europe's largest economy will bounce back after a disappointing second quarter.

Ukraine's forces sticking to ceasefire despite being shelled, says Kiev's ambassador

Ukraine's acting ambassador to the UK has told Britain's LBC radio says Kiev's troops are sticking to a ceasefire despite being repeatedly fired upon by pro-Russian forces.


They say that for the second night in a row they have been shelled with rockets, mortars and artillery.


Andrey Kuzminko says they are holding their fire.
