'BORIS ISLAND' HUB AIRPORT REJECTED

A proposal for a giant new hub airport for the UK has been rejected.

London Mayor Boris Johnson had suggested building a four-runway airport in the Thames Estuary to the east of the British capital.

But the UK's Airports Commission - set up to investigate how best to expand British airport capacity - says the proposal is unworkable.

Business groups say the UK needs to expand capacity rapidly in the face of competition from hub airports such as Vienna, Frankfurt and Schipol in Amsterdam.

But environmental groups and some local residents object to the idea of adding to the size of London Heathrow.

Nicola Smith from the CBI business lobby group says a decision of some sort needs to be made urgently.

Plans for new UK anti-terror laws criticized

Plans for new British anti-terror laws have come under criticism for being vague and unenforceable.

This comes as polls reveal that only 35% of the British public would support Britain taking part in air strikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq.

The new anti-terror plans include giving police the power to seize passports of British nationals suspected of leaving the country to fight with Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

The Prime Minister's office has said it does not know if such a law would be possible.

British shadow defense secretary Yvette Cooper questions the government's approach to tackling the threat of terror in Britain.

UK PM TO OUTLINE NEW RESPONSE TO RADICALISATION

British Prime Minister David Cameron is set to announce new anti-terror legislation later (after 15.30 BST) in response to the threat posed by Islamic State militants fighting in Syria and Iraq.

However, it's understood that the Prime Minister's Conservative Party and coalition partners the Liberal Democrats are still not in final agreement about new plans to tackle extremism.

It's thought over 500 Britons have traveled to Syria and Iraq to fight, and there are growing fears some could attempt to attack the UK on their return.

But there are civil rights concerns about some of the Prime Minister's plans - notably over his desire to seize passports from UK citizens who've traveled to foreign conflicts.
