US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington will not follow Britain's lead in banning trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, warning the move could undermine efforts to secure peace in Gaza.
Britain, France, Canada and nine other nations announced co-ordinated restrictions on Tuesday on goods produced in settlements deemed illegal under international law — prompting Israel to retaliate by closing the British consulate in Jerusalem that serves Palestinians.
Rubio's response was notably more restrained than that of the US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, who suggested Washington could take action against Britain.
