The Trump administration's Justice Department has filed a brief in a Manhattan federal court backing OpenAI in its landmark copyright battle with The New York Times — the first time the US government has taken sides in the growing wave of lawsuits over the use of creators' work to train artificial intelligence.
The department argued that training AI models on copyrighted material amounts to fair use and is critical to national security.
The New York Times hit back, accusing the administration of siding with trillion-dollar technology companies at the expense of American creators.
