The United Nations Human Rights Council has held an emergency session on the threat of atrocities in and around the Sudanese city of El Obeid, with a resolution condemning escalating violence by the Rapid Support Forces and calling for an immediate ceasefire set for a vote on Monday.
UN rights chief Volker Turk has issued what he called a red alert, warning that a human rights catastrophe is unfolding as the paramilitary RSF now controls all routes into the city except one, and drone strikes by both sides have killed dozens of civilians in recent weeks.
Hundreds of thousands of people are believed to be trapped in the North Kordofan capital, facing what aid workers describe as siege-like conditions.
