Extreme heat has forced the cancellation of America's Independence Day Parade in Washington DC, with temperatures exceeding 39 degrees Celsius as the United States marks its 250th birthday.
The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Washington area, threatening US President Donald Trump's planned speech on the National Mall and what organisers say will be the largest fireworks display ever held there.
Cities across the country are scrambling to protect residents from the dangerous conditions.
