Senate Majority Leader John Thune has publicly questioned US President Donald Trump's rationale for imposing new 50-per-cent tariffs on roughly 20 billion dollars' worth of Canadian goods — a notable challenge from the most senior Republican in the Senate.
President Trump signed three proclamations on Sunday invoking a never-before-used provision of the 1930 Tariff Act, targeting Canadian motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages and dairy products, with the levies due to take effect on the 19th of August.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called the tariffs a violation of the North American trade pact, while US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says Ottawa chose retaliation over negotiation.
