GENERAL MOTORS BEATS WALL STREET EXPECTATIONS, RAISES FULL-YEAR OUTLOOK AS SHARES SURGE

General Motors has beaten Wall Street's second-quarter earnings expectations and raised its full-year guidance, sending shares up more than five per cent on Tuesday.

The car manufacturer reported earnings per share of three dollars and 57 cents, comfortably ahead of analysts' forecasts, with revenue of 48 billion dollars.

The company says strong demand for its vehicles in North America and lower costs have driven the result.
