The United States military says it has intercepted ballistic missiles fired by Iran's Revolutionary Guard at American forces based in Jordan, in what US Central Command described as an attempted surprise attack.
The missile strikes came hours after joint US and Saudi Arabian air strikes killed at least twenty Iran-backed militia fighters in eastern Iraq, and after US President Donald Trump warned Tehran it was "going to get a beating".
The escalation has raised fears the war is spreading beyond Iran's borders to engulf the wider region.
