British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as leader of the Labour Party, announcing the decision in a statement outside Number 10 Downing Street on Monday.
The resignation follows weeks of turmoil that saw Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Defence Secretary John Healey quit the Cabinet, and a decisive by-election victory by Sir Keir's rival Andy Burnham in the Makerfield constituency.
Sir Keir, who won a landslide majority just two years ago, will remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen, with the former Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham widely seen as the frontrunner.
In the speech, Sir Keir Starmer explained why he was standing down and set out the timetable for the transition.
