FRANCE HEATWAVE KILLS THREE ELDERLY AS MONDAY SET TO BE HOTTEST DAY YET WITH OVER 800 SCHOOLS SHUT

Three people aged between 80 and 95 have died in south-western France as Monday shapes up to be the most dangerous day of an intense June heatwave, with temperatures forecast to reach 42 degrees Celsius.

More than 800 schools are shut and a further 1,800 are on reduced timetables, while the national rail operator has cancelled dozens of long-distance services to prevent air-conditioning failures on trains.

The French government has deployed thousands of police and firefighters across the Paris region.

Ross Cullen has more from Paris.
