23 Italian cities are under a red heat alert, meaning the weather is a threat to the entire population, not just vulnerable groups such as the elderly.
On Tuesday, Rome saw its highest temperature ever recorded, at 41.8 degrees Celsius.
But as Giles Gibson reports from the Italian capital, the European heat record still stands, at least for now.
