India's Supreme Court to decide if affirmative action for economically weak is "constitutional"

Intro:

India's Supreme Court will examine a new government provision that grants a 10 percent quota in government jobs and admissions for the Economically Weaker Section
It refers to those who possess an income of less than $10,000 a year.
It has been argued that the amendment departs from the view that the Constitution should only give out special protections to socially disadvantaged groups - based on India's archaic caste system.

China Confirms Xi Jinping Visit to Central Asia

China has confirmed its leader, Xi Jinping, will travel to central Asia for his firts trip abroad since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

That's according to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry in Beijing.

All eyes will be on a likely meeting with Russian President Vladmir Putin at a gathering of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Uzbekistan.

Kremlin under fire after Ukrainian forces capture large amounts of territory previously seized

The Kremlin, facing mounting questions about the country's invasion of Ukraine, has sidestepped questions about whether Vladimir Putin has confidence in his defense minister.


Russian officials now say their forces are outnumbered 8 to 1 by the Ukrainian army in some parts of the country and are conceding that they have lost territory they previously seized there.


In Moscow, there's been growing criticism of the Russian army's performance in Ukraine on state television, and questions raised about Vladimir Putin's decision to invade.

Uganda Pays Reparations To the DR Congo

50 million people trapped in modern slavery: ILO

50 million people are trapped in modern slavery on any given day, a new report from the International Labour Organisation shows.


That marks an increase of 9.3 million since the last round of research in 2017, a worrying trend which runs counter to the United Nations' goal of eradicating all forms of modern slavery by 2030.
