UK STUDIES: OMICRON 'LESS SEVERE'

Early studies on the spread of Omicron in the UK suggest it is less
likely to result in hospitalisation than earlier strains of
coronavirus.

But scientists warn that may be offset by how transmissible it is -
and it could therefore still lead to a large number of
hospitalisations in a short period.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is now not expected to announce any
new restrictions for the post-Christmas period this week.

FT data journalist John Burn-Murdoch says it looks like the UK Omicron
outbreak may be close to peaking already.
