UK DEFENDS NEW BORDER POLICIES

The UK government is defending the threat of up to 10 years in jail for people who lie about having recently traveled to a red-listed Covid-19 hotspot.

It's part of new restrictions on international travel - including mandatory hotel quarantine for arrivals from red-listed locations from Monday.

The opposition Labour Party says all international arrivals should have to isolate in a hotel.

But many Conservative MPs are raising concerns about draconian jail sentences, and are asking for details about how and when restrictions on international travel can be unwound.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps says it's an appropriate maximum punishment.
