MAJOR UK PARTIES HAMMERED IN LOCAL ELECTIONS

The UK's two major political parties have both faced major losses in local elections.

Council and mayoral elections in England and Northern Ireland have seen gains for smaller parties and independent candidates.

The Conservatives and Labour both say they've been punished by voters as a result of the failure to pass a Brexit deal.

The Liberal Democrat Party - which opposes Brexit - has made major gains.

Former finance minister George Osborne believes the Conservative Party is facing a backlash for not agreeing a Brexit compromise which it will also feel at upcoming European polls.
