Paris braces for further protests on May 1st

Paris is bracing itself for another day of potentially violent demonstrations on the 1st of May, which traditionally sees large union marches in the capital. 

The police says they'll be using a new approach to violent protesters - aiming to confront them more directly.

Ugandan Popstar Bobiwine Jailed

Ugandan authorities have jailed pop star and politician Bobi Wine for organising protests against taxes on social media and mobile money.

 

The local musician who was escorted by a massive crowd of supporters was arrested on Monday as he made his way to the Police Criminal Investigations Directorate in the Capital - Kampala.

UK BLOOD SCANDAL INQUIRY TO TAKE EVIDENCE

A public inquiry's starting to take evidence into a contaminated blood scandal in the UK which is thought to have killed over 2000 people.

In the 1970s and 80s around 4800 people with haemophilia are thought to have been infected with HIV or hepatitis C.

Thousands of patients were also infected during childbirth or operations due to contaminated blood products imported from the US.

Michelle Tolley was given contaminated blood during childbirth and is one of those giving testimony.

Rosenstein to resign from Justice Department

US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has handed in his resignation to President Donald Trump.

Mr Rosenstein - who endured a rocky relationship with the president during a turbulent two years at the Justice Department - will leave his post on the 11th of May.

Measles cases hit 25-year high in U.S.

Health officials in the United States have announced that cases of
measles in the country have hit a 25-year high.

The outbreak has been reported in 22 states the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention believe unvaccinated children have been most
affected.

U.S. consumer spending posts biggest increase since 2009

US consumer spending has surged with the biggest increase in nearly a decade during March.

The 0.9 per cent rise was the biggest monthly gain since August 2009, according to the Commerce Department.

Compromise Talks over Brexit Resume

The British Government says it still intends to get MPs to approve a Brexit deal before the 22nd May, to avoid taking part in European elections.


The incumbent Conservative Party government is resuming talks with opposition Labour, to try to break the impasse over the country's exit from the EU.


Lawmakers need to approve an EU withdrawal bill in order to leave the bloc, failure to do so has led to two extensions of the Brexit deadline.

India votes in fourth phase of seven-phase general election

Over 70 constituencies in nine states are voting in the fourth round of India's massive general elections.


This phase has more than 127 million eligible voters. The last round of voting takes place on May 19 with results due on May 23.
