Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the sanctions demonstrate ongoing U.S. support for freedom of expression.
The sanctions freeze the North Korean officials' property or interests in the U.S. and ban transactions with U.S. citizens.
Kim Jong-un's reported number two, Choe Ryong-hae, is one of the targets.
But experts see this is a symbolic move considering North Korea is already heavily sanctioned.
Washington and Pyongyang are currently deadlocked in talks over Kim's weapons program.
It was thought a visit by Kim to Seoul this year could help smooth the way for more talks.

Voyager 2 spacecraft reaches a new milestone
The spacecraft that took the famous "Pale Blue Dot" photo of earth from the edge of the solar system has reached another milestone.
NASA's says its Voyager 2 probe has left the so-called heliosphere and entered interstellar space.
