Abrams takes command of U.S. forces in Korea

U.S. Army Gen. Robert Abrams has assumed command of U.S. forces in South Korea. In his new role, he's also in charge of maintaining the armistice that ended fighting but not the war between North and South Korea.

Rain fell on the change-of-command ceremony south of Seoul as Gen. Robert Abrams relieved Gen. Vincent Brooks of his duties.

Abrams will lead U.S. forces in South Korea, as well as the United Nations Command and the South Korea-U.S. combined forces command.

The UN command manages the armistice that stopped fighting during the Korean War. That agreement includes oversight of all activity in the DMZ.

Lately, the Koreas have been drawing down security along their shared-border in order to build trust.

But for now those moves may be superficial. The U.S. and North Korea are struggling to hold more talks, and Abrams said it's important to maintain a "fight tonight capability" on the Korean Peninsula.

PRINCE CHARLES 'WON'T MEDDLE' AS KING

Britain's Prince Charles says he recognises he'll have to stop weighing in on causes he's passionate about, once he becomes King.

He says he's 'not that stupid' and understands being monarch will be different from being heir to the throne.

Prince Charles has given a wide-ranging interview to mark his 70th birthday, and says he won't meddle in issues from the environment to agriculture to architecture when he succeeds Queen Elizabeth II.

Former cabinet minister David Mellor says he'll have to try even harder to be non-party political as King.

According to Yonhap News, a South Korean official said the cancelation of talks is regrettable but Seoul expects Washington and Pyongyang to reschedule soon.

These delays, the official said, are to be expected.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was supposed to meet top North Korean official Kim Yong-chol in New York.

Pompeo had said he hoped to learn more about how and when North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would give up his nuclear weapons.

But this cancelation is another sign North Korea and the U.S. are far from reaching any kind of deal.
