Extended Brexit discussions in Brussels

The lead British and European Union negotiators are holding extended discussion in Brussels to try to come to a deal on Brexit.

They are working to find mutual solutions to questions over a future trading relationship between the two sides and on the contentious issue of the Irish border.

LABOUR MP QUITS OVER ANTI-SEMITISM

Veteran UK Labour MP Frank Field says he's quit the party's parliamentary group due to its 'appalling culture' and failure to deal with anti-semitism.

Mr Field says Labour has become a party where anti-semitism is 'more than tolerated' under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.

He'll now sit as an independent Labour MP, having represented Birkenhead for four decades.

Jeremy Corbyn has thanked him for his service to the Labour Party.

Indian Rupee hits 71 to dollar mark for the first time ever

The Indian currency's free fall continues with the rupee collapsing to a new record low of 71 against the US dollar for the first time ever.

The rupee is one of the worst performing currencies in Asia and has depreciated 10% in this year.

US and Canadian negotiators scramble to clinch NAFTA deal before Friday deadline


US and Canadian teams in Washington are scrambling to clinch a deal on renegotiating NAFTA before a looming deadline on Friday.

The Trump administration wants Canada to join an agreement that it's already struck with Mexico by the end of the working week.

That would mean the US Congress can study the deal for 90 days before President Trump signs it, as well as allowing Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto to get an agreement before he leaves office.

Trump threatens to pull US out of World Trade Organization

President Trump says he'll pull America out of the World Trade Organization if it doesn't treat the United States more fairly.


It's the first time the President has publicly threatened to withdraw from the body - a move that could undermine the global trading system.

UK considers banning energy drinks sales to children

The British government is launching a consultation on plans to ban the sale of energy drinks to under-18s in England.

FBI arrests California man accused of threatening to kill Boston Globe journalists

Putin's pension reforms to cost Russia additional 500 billion rubles

Vladimir Putin's proposals for softening Russia's plans to raise its retirement age will cost the government an additional 500 billion rubles - that's more than 7.3 billion US dollars. UK AND FRANCE IN TALKS OVER 'SCALLOP WARS'

The UK and France are in talks to try and de-escalate a tense situation in the English Channel where French and British boats have clashed over scallops.

France says it's ready to deploy extra police vessels to prevent further clashes.

But the UK says British boats are fishing legally off France's north coast at Normandy.

French fishermen and women claim British boats are depleting scallop stocks in the area.

The European Union says the UK and France need to find an 'amicable solution'.

India's demonetisation drive failed to uncover black money

India's central bank has said that almost all of the notes banned during a crackdown on illegal cash in 2016 have come back into the banking system- raising questions about how successful the government was in cracking down on black money hoarders.

While announcing demonetisation, the Indian government had claimed that an estimated $780 billion of black money would be wiped out. However the Reserve Bank of India's report shows that only $1.5 billion was not recovered.

Trump blames China for lack of progress on North Korea

Dramatic Increase in Official Death Toll from Hurricane Maria


A new analysis of Hurricane Maria's deadly charge through Puerto Rico a year ago has prompted the US government to sharply increase the official death toll from the storm.


The government now estimates nearly  50 times as many people died as a result of the storm as previously estimated.

After talking to Russia investigators, President Trump's top White House lawyer to leave administration

President Trump's top White House lawyer will leave the administration later this year, the President has announced on Twitter.

Russia's Putin attempts to sell unpopular pension reforms


Russia's President Vladimir Putin has given a televised address to try to persuade his people to accept unpopular pension reforms which have affected his personal popularity. He announced some changes to the proposed legislation, which will now mean the retirement age is raised by five years for both men and women. Moscow Correspondent Lucy Taylor reports.
