PNG wants to play mediator between US and China

Papua New Guinea's government says it's ready to play its part in brokering peace between the US and China to avoid a full-blown global trade war.
Port Moresby will host leaders from 21 Pacific-rim countries including the US, China, Russia, Japan at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November this year.

THERESA MAY WARNED OVER CUSTOMS BREXIT STRATEGY

UK Prime Minister Theresa May's been warned her government could be collapsed by her own MPs over a key plank of Brexit strategy.

Mrs May is hosting a meeting of senior ministers on Wednesday to discuss customs arrangements with the EU as Britain leaves the bloc.

Downing Street is understood to favour a so-called 'customs partnership' which would see the UK mirroring EU customs rules at its borders and collecting tariffs on behalf of Brussels.

But senior Brexiteer MPs from within Theresa May's Conservative Party say this would be unacceptable - and it's thought some would be willing to bring the government down over the issue.

US judge orders Iran pay $6bn to 9/11 victims

A Manhattan judge has ordered Iran to pay the victims of the September 11th 2001 terror attacks more than $6bn in compensation.

However, Iran's link to the attacks is contested, after an investigation found no link between the hijackers and the Iranian government.

US Secretary of State Pompeo insists Israeli intelligence on Iran nuclear program is real

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says that the intelligence revealed by Israel on an Iranian nuclear weapons program is authentic and that much of it is new to US experts.

But other analysts say it does not contain any convincing evidence that Iran is in breach of the 2015 agreement with world powers which curbs Iran's nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.

Indian government allows private company to manage Red Fort operations

In a first, the Indian government has allowed a private conglomerate to manage the operations of the iconic Red Fort.

U.S. delay decision on steel/aluminium tariffs

The United States has extended negotiations with the European Union, Canada and Mexico over steel and aluminium tariffs.

In March the Trump Administration placed a global 25% tariff on U.S. imports of steel and a 10% tariff on aluminium describing current trade practices as a threat to national security. 

Nations around the world have been negotiating with the U.S. to be made exempt from the decision.

Canada, the EU and Mexico now have until June 1st to reach a deal with the U.S.
