EU says it will react firmly to US steel tariffs

The European Union has reacted strongly to a plan by the US to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum imports.

Brussels is calling the US move "blatant protectionism" and says it will draw up countermeasures.

Death Toll from Extreme Weather Rises in Europe

Severe winter weather continues to pound parts of Europe.

ARMY DEPLOYED AMID FREEZING CONDITIONS IN UK

The army's been deployed in the UK after hundreds of drivers became stuck in heavy snow.

Moscow refutes US accusations of violating INF treaty

Russia's Ambassador to the United States refuted Washington's claims that Moscow's new strategic weapons violate the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty. During Thursday's speech Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country possessed "invincible" nuclear capable weapons that can reach anywhere in the world. U.S. responds to Russian nuclear weapon threat

The United States has responded to claims from Russia that they have
developed an invincible nuclear weapon.

During President Vladimir Putin's two hour speech he said U.S. missile
defense systems in Asia and Europe prompted Moscow to create these
weapons.

In his address a video graphic was shown that appeared to show
missiles falling on the U.S. state of Florida.

The State Department says it's not the behaviour of a responsible
international player.

Growing number of US retailers limit gun sales

The U.S. retail giant Kroger has announced that it will no longer sell guns to anyone under the age of 21.

Kroger is third major retail chain to announce this week that it is cracking down on who can purchase firearms.

US to Impose Stiff Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Imports

The United Nations says Russia's planned 5-hour pause in fighting in Syria is not long enough to get aid to besieged civilians in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta.

Tusk calls for May to come up with better plan for Ireland/Northern Ireland border


The President of the European Council says British Prime Minister Theresa May needs to come up with a better idea of handling the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland post Brexit, if she does not like the EU's plans. 


The comments came as the two leaders met in London to discuss the EU's draft withdrawal treaty which was published Wednesday and which suggests Northern Ireland stay in the EU's customs area to prevent a hard border with Ireland.   From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Germany confirms major cyberattack

Germany's government confirmed it had discovered a major security breach of its federal computer networks in December.


Officials said they'd been able to secure the system since then, but it's unclear how much data may have been compromised.

Music streaming site to go public in New York

The world's largest music streaming service Spotify says it plans to
go public on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company is believed to be valued at around $20 billion despite
losing around $1.5 billion last year.

Spotify says it won't be underwritten meaning that there will be no
set price to inform opening trades when they go public.
