Presidential Election underway in India

Voting has begun to elect India's 14th President. PM Modi's party- the BJP and a coalition of Opposition parties have both fielded a Dalit candidate.

Dalits are traditionally the lowest rung of the caste system in India and formerly were untouchables. Many Dalits have accused both political factions of fielding a Dalit to court the 200 million strong community ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The PM has said he is confident his candidate will win. The results will be announced on July 20.
