Calls for unity following shooting at Congressional baseball practice

The shooting of five, including a key member of the Republican Congressional leadership, at baseball practice has renewed calls for unity in a politically divided American capital.

The Republicans Congressmen, staffers and friends were practicing for a charity baseball game.

Most public activities of the U.S. Congress have been post-poned in the wake of the violence.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan spoke briefly in a short session.

London block death toll rises to 12

British police have confirmed the death toll in the London  apartment block fire has risen to 12, with more fatalities expected. 

Firefighters rescued 65 people from the 24 storey Grenfell Tower in the Notting Hill area of London after the fire began in the early hours of the morning.    The London Fire Service say they have now searched all the floors, even while pockets of fire continues to burn. 

Witnesses say they saw people trapped in their homes, while some jumped multiple storeys to try to get to safety as the fire engulfed the whole block.

Metropolitan police commander Stuart Cundy confirmed the death toll.

U.S. Capitol police returned fire when James T. Hodgkinson III began shooting at Congressmen, staffers and friends during an early morning practice.

According to reports, Mr. Hodgkinson was 66 years-old, from Illinois, and had supported Democrat, Senator Bernie Sanders.

Congressman shooting suspect identified

The suspect in the shooting of a US congressman has been identified as 66 year-old James Hodgkinson of Illinois.

Police said five people were transported to the hospital following the incident at a Congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

FBI officials said the investigation was ongoing but it was too early to say whether it was an assassination attempt or an act of terrorism.

US Capitol police and Alexandria city police are confirmed five were shot during baseball practice for the annual bipartisan Congressional game.

This includes one of the members of the Repubican leadership, Representative Steve Scalise, two staffers and two Capitol Police.

London's Mayor promises to fully investigate deadly apartment block fire

Firefighters are searching a 24 storey tower block apartment in west London while also tackling the blaze that engulfed the building killing at least six residents. 

  A fire broke out on the second floor in the early hours of the morning before spreading rapidly to most of the building. 

Over sixty people have been treated in hospital following the incident. 

After touring the scene, London's Mayor Sadiq Khan  warned authorities believe the death toll will rise.

At least six people have died in a huge fire that engulfed a London apartment block in the west of the city. 

The Metropolitan police are warning this figure is likely to rise during what it called a complex recovery operation likely to last a number of days.

It's  not yet known how many people are unaccounted for. 

The blaze began on the second floor of the 24 storey block just after one o'clock in the morning local time.    Eyewitnesses saw people trapped in their homes calling for help.
