Russia to step up meetings at Syrian peace talks

LEAD:


The Russian delegation and the UN Special Envoy for Syria have stepped up mediation with the Syrian government and opposition in Geneva.  Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister has held meetings with the Syrian government and was due to hold talks with the opposition on Wednesday.  However, these talks are in doubt after Russia vetoed a UN resolution to impose sanctions on Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons. Julia Lyubova reports from Moscow.

Putin admits Russia’s anti-doping system has failed

Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted the country's anti-doping system has failed. He urged to adhere to recommendations of the World Anti-Doping Agency and continue fight against doping in Russian sports. Russia came under scrutiny following last year's independent investigation into Russia's doping system which led to Russia's Athletics Federation and Russia's Paralympic team suspension from International competitions. President Trump tells allies to pay their military obligations

American President Donald Trump says he's committed to international military agreements, but he's warned that allies must pay their way.

In his address to a joint session of Congress, Mr Trump praised the American military, and pledged to wipe out the so-called Islamic State group. 

Mr Trump had worried international allies by hinting the US might not defend countries that did not pay a fair share towards defence.  

In his speech he said while America needed to look after its own interests first, he remained committed to international security. He said pressure to make allies pay their fair share towards defence was paying off.

President Trump reiterates America-first pledge in first address to Congress

American President Donald Trump has made his first address to the US Congress, pledging to fulfill his campaign promises, including those that have divided the nation.

While he got applause from Republicans, Democrats were largely silent. 

Mr Trump stressed his America-first pledge, blaming international trade deals for the loss of American jobs and industries.

He said it was unacceptable that American exporters were forced to pay high tariffs, while foreign companies ship products to America almost for free.

Mr Trump has been a controversial President in his first month in office, but he tried to use the trade issue and its effect on the US economy, to get support from both parties.

American President Donald Trump has told the US Congress that he will make another attempt to limit migration, following his controversial Muslim travel ban that was struck down by the courts.

Democrat: Trump Suggested Bomb Threats To Jewish Centres May Be False Flags

A Democratic Attorney General who met with Donald Trump has said the US President suggested recent bomb threats at Jewish centres might be so-called 'false flags', though the White House has refuted the claims.

Josh Shapiro was part of a group of state attorneys general who met with Mr. Trump on Tuesday at the White House, after a wave of threats and vandalism on Jewish centres in at least nine states on Monday.

Trump takes apart water regulations

water regulations.

Russia vetoes Syria resolution at UN

Russia, joined by China, vetoed a United Nations resolution punishing Syria for the use of chemical weapons.

Syria has been in the midst of civil war for six years, and a UN panel found that chemical weapons were used at least three times in 2014 and 2015.

A prominent Republican in the US Senate is calling President Trump's budget proposals "dead on arrival" on Capitol Hill.


Senator Lindsay Graham of South Caroline says he's horrified by reports that President Trump plans to pay for a massive US military build-up by slashing the State Department's budget by up to one third.
