Prison guard found dead in Delaware, siege ends

A prison hostage situation in the American state of Delaware has ended, with one prison guard being found dead.

As our North American correspondent John Clarke reports,  the prisoners took over the jail with a number of complaints, including blaming new President Donald Trump.

HBOS Fraud Scandal: Six Jailed

Six disgraced UK financiers have been jailed today for between 3 and 15 years, on charges of fraud and bribery. 


The group, including two ex HBOS bankers, carried out a 300 million dollar loans scam, ahead of the 2008 financial crash.

Sec. Tillerson urges cooperation, focus on mission

The new U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has struck a remarkably different tone in remarks to diplomats and civilian employees on his first day at the agency.

More than 1,000 State Department employees have joined a dissent cable, using a special dissent channel to express their dismay at Trump administration actions.

White House: Trump's comments about sending troops to Mexico were "lighthearted"

According to the White House, Donald Trump made a "light-hearted" remark about sending US troops into Mexico, during a phone call with President Enrique Pena Nieto.

President Trump reportedly said that he was ready to send U.S. troops into Mexico to stop "bad hombres down there", but was not making a serious threat to invade.

Trump: "Every nation...virtually" takes advantage of USA

President Trump says the United States is "taken advantage of" by virtually every nation on earth, and he's told his supporters not to worry when they hear about tough phone calls that he has with world leaders.

He was speaking after the disclosure that the President's call with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull last weekend went off-the-rails in a dispute over an immigration agreement.

Romanian anti-government protests enter into their third day

Tens of thousands of people are continuing to take to the streets of Bucharest in protest of a new corruption decree passed by the Romanian government.

Russian opposition leader wins European Court payout

Russia has been ordered by the European Court of Human Rights to pay
the country's opposition leader Alexei Navalny 63,000 Euros.

Navalny is a prominent critic of Russia's President Vladimir Putin and
the European Court ruled that his right to peacefully protest had been
violated on multiple occasions.

UK government unveils Brexit White Paper

The British government has published its Brexit White Paper, an official policy document which sets out its plans for leaving the European Union. 

It comes after a vote on Wednesday in which MPs overwhelmingly backed legislation to allow the Brexit process to begin.

Brexit Secretary David Davis introduced the White Paper in the House of Commons saying the UK would prosper outside of the European Union.

British government says Heathrow expansion essential post Brexit

The British government says expanding the country's largest airport Heathrow is essential as it faces life outside the European Union. 

A 16-week consultation on planning and infrastructure proposals has been launched with Transport Secretary Chris Grayling promising the expansion will provide better connectivity throughout the country and send a signal that post Brexit, the UK is open for business. 

However the government says Heathrow will have to ban night flights and retain environmental targets if a third runway is to get the go-ahead. 

The plans are vehemently opposed by a coalition of  environmental activists, resident groups and some government ministers.  

Mr Grayling told fellow MPs in the House of Commons that a new runway is essential as Britain leaves the European Union.

French candidate Fillon under pressure to quit

French centre right presidential candidate Francois Fillon is under increasingly intense pressure to quit the race after revelations he paid his wife almost a million dollars (832 000 euros) for work as a parliamentary assistant that she allegedly did not do.
On Thursday, France 2 television broadcast an interview Penelope Fillon gave to the Sunday Telegraph in 2007 in which she said she had never worked for her husband - although accounts show he had been paying her a salary since 1988.

British goverment due to publish Brexit White Paper

The British government is due to publish a White Paper later Thursday, an official policy document which will set out its plans for Brexit. 

It follows a vote in the House of Commons Wednesday evening in which MPs voted overwhelming to pass legislation to allow Britain's exit from the European Union to begin. 

Prime Minister Theresa May has said she wants to begin the process by the end of March.   She detailed the approach she intends to take in a speech in January but has since come under pressure to give more detail in a White Paper.

Russian Foreign Ministry optimistic about US cooperation

Russia's Foreign Ministry is optimistic that the United States will be
willing to work with them without prejudice.

Rex Tillerson sworn in as US Secretary of State


Rex Tillerson has been sworn in as the US Secretary of State.

Donald Trump, who attended the event in the oval office, said Mr Tillerson would bring unique skills to the role.

Despite 43 senators voting against his appointment, The former ExxonMobil CEO had earlier sealed the majority backing needed from the US Senate.

America's top diplomat takes on a full inbox of issues, from Iran, to ISIS to the ongoing border-wall dispute with Mexico but likely at top will be Trump's controversial executive orders which currently ban all refugees entering the US and deny people from mainly Muslim countries.

President Trump, speaking after Tillerson was sworn in, said the Texan would rise to the demands of the job.
