The British author of Watership Down, Richard Adams, has died at the age of 96.

His children's tale about rabbits looking for a new home sold tens of millions of copied worldwide.

Polish passenger reportedly shot hours before Berlin attack

According to media reports, the dead passenger found in the truck used in last week's terror attack in Berlin was likely shot several hours before before the attack.

Investigators are still trying to determine who may have helped the attacker, who was killed by police last week in Italy.

Police in Turkey stand trial over coup plot

Twenty nine police officers have gone on trial on Turkey over their alleged role in the failed military coup attempt earlier this year.

It is the first major criminal trial related to the coup attempt during which over two hundred people died.

Trump criticizes United Nations days after Israel vote

US President-elect Donald Trump has criticized the United Nations
describing it as a club for people to get together, talk and have a
good time.

This comes several days after the United States decided not to veto a
UN resolution that calls on Israel to stop building settlements on
Palestinian land.

Chapecoense crash in Colombia was human error


Colombian aviation authorities have concluded that the plane crash that killed 71 passengers, including most of the Chapecoense Brazilian football team was caused by a series of human errors. 

Investigators did not find any technical failures, but rather a series of missteps by the pilot, as well as Bolivian regulators which resulted in the cash.

First black box from Black Sea crash found

LEAD:

Russia has found the first black box from a military plane that crashed into the Black Sea killing all 92 on board on Sunday.  The recorder, one of several reported to be on board, contains information that could help investigators identify the cause of the crash, which killed dozens of Red Army Choir singers and dancers en route to Syria to entertain Russian troops in the run-up to the New Year, as well as a member of an NGO and nine journalists. Shinzo Abe visits Pearl Harbor

The Japanese Prime Minister is visiting Hawaii in an historic trip

Chile: Tsunami alert lifted

Chilean authorities have lifted a tsunami warning after a major earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck the southern part of the Chile on Christmas day. 

Chile's National Emergency Services said that approximately 4,000 people had evacuated the Los Lagos coastal areas after the queake.

Fresh offensive expected in Mosul

According to Reuters forces in Iraq are preparing for a fresh assault
on the city of Mosul in a bid to purge the so-called Islamic State.

Authorities tell Donald Trump he cannot close charitable foundation

Israel PM summons US ambassador

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has summoned U.S. Ambassador Danny Shaprio for a meeting, following the U.S. abstaining from a key vote on a resolution at the U.N. Security Council.

That resolution criticises Israel for it's continuing policy of building settlements on what is probably Palestinian land, and it's the first time the U.S. did not veto such a resolution.

GEORGE MICHAEL DEAD AT 53

British pop star George Michael has died at the age of 53.
 
His publicist says he died 'peacefully' at his home in Oxfordshire in the south of England.

George Michael was known for hits such as Last Christmas, Club Tropicana and Faith - and was involved in the original Band Aid Christmas record.

UN approves resolution demanding end to Israeli settlements

The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution
demanding Israel stop settlement building.

Long-time Israeli the United States abstained from the vote but did
not veto it.

The US decision was in defiance to appeals from the Israeli government
and US President-elect Donald Trump to block the proposal.
