German MPs visit Turkish base, ending standoff

A group of German lawmakers visited Incrilik (IN JUR LIK) air base in southern Turkey, defusing long-simmering tensions between the two countries.

Turkey had denied German MPs access to German troops stationed there, in response to a vote about the Armenian genocide in June.

Hurricane Matthew moves closer to US coast

Hurricane Matthew is moving across the Bahamas after killing 17 people in the Caribbean.

The storm has already battered Haiti and Cuba and is expected to reach the US coastline by late Thursday.

Matthew is a major hurricane, packing winds of nearly 200 kilometers per hour.

Samsung phone catches fire on plane

A Samsung phone has apparently caught fire on a plane in the U.S.

The firm had a mass recall of its Galaxy Note 7 devices last month
after problems with batteries.

US questions Israel's commitment to 2-state solution

The Obama administration is sharply questioning Israel's commitment to a 2-state solution with the Palestinians after Israel announced the construction of a new Jewish settlement on the far west bank, near the border with Jordan.

In a statement strongly condemning the decision to build the settlement, the U.S. says the the decision is contrary to Israel's national security interests and makes the possibility of a viable Palestinian state even less likely.

U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner says the Obama Administration was taken particularly aback by this decision.

Yahoo Calls Reports of Scanning Users' Emails "Misleading"

Yahoo is downplaying allegations that it scanned millions of its users’ emails on behalf of the US government.

Guterres Set To Be Confirmed As New UN Secretary General

Antonio Guterres, the former Portuguese Prime Minister, looks set to be confirmed as the new UN Secretary General in a formal vote by the Security Council on Thursday.

It comes after a long selection process involving six informal straw polls, winnowing down 13 candidates for the top job. 

Jonathan Cristol from the World Policy Institute says although it's surprising a Western European prevailed when a candidate from Eastern Europe was favoured in the rotation, Russia in particular is likely to have had its own reasons for supporting Mr. Guterres:

US welcomes new UN Secretary General

The U.S., a member of the 'permanent-five' is welcoming the agreement to put forward former Portugese prime minister Antonio Guterres as the next United Nations Secretary-General.

John Kerry and Colombian President speak on peace deal

Obama warns of "serious" hurricane

Antonio Guterres Wins 6th UN Straw Poll To Find New Secretary General

Antonio Guterres has won the UN Security Council's sixth straw poll to find a successor to Ban Ki Moon as Secretary General.

The former Portuguese Prime Minister was the clear winner in the informal vote, which was colour coded for the first time, to mark out the ballots of the permanent five members from the ten elected ones.

Investigation into possible terror attack in Brussels after two police officers stabbed

Counter terror in Belgium are investigating the stabbing of two police officers in the capital, Brussels.

Neither officer is mortally injured and the attacker was shot in the leg before being arrested and taken away in an ambulance according to Belgian media.
