South Africa's ruling party the ANC, is facing a significant loss in the local council election.

Vote counting is coming to a close and the opposition Democratic Alliance is leading by an edge.

Local media in south africa reports Mr Zuma has lost in his home town in Nkandla.

The Democratic Alliance has also won in the three major cities of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, formerly a stronghold of the ANC.

The results show voters are switching positions and voting the opposition.

There is growing frustration in south africa over the lack of jobs and basic services.

The ANC ended white minority rule and it has won elections since 1994.

Opponents say it will be a big embarrassment for the ANC if it loses the election this time.
