Turkey declares a state of emergency


Turkish President Recep Erdogan has declared a state of emergency, effective for three months, following last week's attempted coup.

He promised that Turkish citizens should not have "the slightest concern with regards to democracy, rule of law, fundamental rights and freedoms".

Turkey is also central to the fight against the Islamic State, with coalition forces running missions out of the air base at Incirlik.

In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry thinks the mission to fight the Islamic State is on track in the wake of Turkey's political problems.

Goal of $2 billion in pledges for Iraq

The Obama administration believes it has secured more than $2 billion in new money to support Iraq, including $450 million for humanitarian relief.

The cash will go for reconstruction efforts in areas worst hit by the wave of violence and war tied to the rise of the Islamic State.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry outlined where the money would go:

Prominent journalist killed in car bomb in Kiev

LEAD:


A prominent journalist working for the online investigative newspaper, Ukrayinska Pravda, was killed by a car bomb in central Kiev.  Pavel Sheremet was driving to work in the car of the newspaper's owner when it was blown up.  Julia Lyubova reports from Moscow.

Trump denies offering Kasich "most powerful" Vice Presidency in history

Donald Trump is denying reports that he offered one of his former rivals the chance to become the "most powerful Vice President" in US history.


Governor John Kasich of Ohio was reportedly approached by one of Mr. Trump's sons for conversations about the job.

US freezes Malaysian development bank assets

The U.S. is hoping to force the forefeiture of more than $ 1 billion in assets, originally associated with 1MDB, the Malaysian development bank.

The Wall Street Journal reports, some $13 billion was raised for the sovereign wealth fund, but about $6 billion has gone missing.

May's comments after Merkel meeting

The UK's new prime minister Theresa May began the process of meeting with European leaders by visiting German chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. 

While formal negotiations over Brexit won't begin until the UK triggers article 50 to officially start the process of leaving the EU, everyone is closely watching the early signs from both countries.

Despite what could be a long and difficult process, May stressed her support for her European partners.
