Juncker praises Merkel’s refugee policy

German chancellor Angela Merkel received a vote of confidence from a top European Union official over her refugee policy. 

Jean-Claude Juncker told a German newspaper that history would prove Merkel right in the end.

Obama Talks China And Trade At End of ASEAN Summit in California

President Obama has been speaking at the conclusion of a two day summit in California with Southeast Asian leaders, intended to improve trade and political ties.

The gathering at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage aimed to solidify US influence in the Asia Pacific, since Mr. Obama has championed a foreign policy 'rebalance' towards the region during his presidency.

Simon Marks is at Sunnylands, and says forming a common stance over Chinese activity in the South China Sea was one key aim, brought out in the final joint statement released by all the leaders:

UN: Peackeepers in Central African Republic face new sexual abuse allegations

UN peacekeepers from the Democratic Republic of Congo are facing

Former UN Chief Boutros Boutros-Ghali dies at 93

Former United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has died.


The sixth UN chief, who served in the early 1990s, passed away on Tuesday in Egypt. He was 93 years old.

US and Cuba sign air travel deal

The US and Cuba have signed an agreement Tuesday that will resume commercial flights between the nations for the first time in a half century.

As part of the terms, US airlines can offer one hundred and ten flights per day to Cuba - twenty flights per day to Havana, and ten flights per day to nine other cities.

Four OPEC Countries Agree to Freeze Oil Output

4 killed by gas explosion in a residential building in Russia, many feared trapped under rubble

At least four people have died, nine were hospitalized after a gas explosion rocked an apartment building in the town of Yaroslavl some 270 km to the north-east of Moscow.
