US and Russian defense officials spoke Thursday in an effort deconflict their operations inside Syria, in what the US says is the first in a series of such talks.

White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said during the hour-long video teleconference, US officials raised concerns that Russian airstrikes are not solely targeting locations of Islamic State militants.

He said Moscow seems to be striking indiscriminately, without differentiating between terrorists and armed civilians who oppose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

This Thursday marks a milestone in American use of credit cards, as the country shifts to the use of so-called 'chip and dip', which requires an electronic pin rather than a signature.

From today, if a merchant doesn't have the technology to allow the new style of payment, they'll be liable for any fraud on that transaction.
