Greece must stick to bailout agreed no matter what the result of the election, says EU

The EU insists any new Greek government will remain tied to the country's bailout plan agreed in August regardless of election results. 

The latest polls show the incumbent left-wing, Syriza party, led by Alexis Tsipras, and the conservative New Democracy, led by Vangelis Meimarakis (Mee-mer-ark-kiss), remain tied going into the election on September 20.

UK TERROR ARRESTS SPIKE

Record numbers of people are being arrested in the UK for terrorism offences, according to new figures.

Terror-related arrests spiked 31% in the year to March, compared with the same period in the previous 12 months.

New research indicates the possibility that Alzheimer's could be transmitted

Alzheimer's disease may be transmitted through contaminated injections of human growth hormone or via medical instruments, according to UK researchers.

Experts from University College London stress their early research does not mean Alzheimer's is infectious.

APPLE UNVEILS NEW IPHONES, IPAD

Apple has unveiled new upgrades to its iPhone range at an event in San Francisco, as well as attempts to reinvigorate iPad sales.

The new iPhones boast so-called 3D touch, which will see the screen respond differently depending on how hard it is pressed.

Apple also hopes its new iPad Pro tablet with a larger screen and the option for a stylus and attachable keyboard will see it compete with portable laptops.

Danny Cox from stockbroker Hargreaves Lansdown says investors have been particularly keen to see how Apple would improve the iPad range which has seen falling sales.

Hungary launches military exercises to deal with migrant influx

Hungary is preparing military action to help police stem the influx of migrants along the Serbian border.

Soldiers have already begun conducting exercises as thousands of refugees mainly from Syria, continue traveling through Hungary to reach Northern Europe.

UK LABOUR PARTY LEADERSHIP VOTING ENDS

Voting is closing (11GMT Thursday) in a UK Labour Party leadership contest which could see the most left-wing leader elected in decades.

Leftist candidate Jeremy Corbyn could be set to lead opposition Labour after a campaign which has been plagued by claims of infiltrators joining the party to sabotage it by voting for him.

But Labour's ranks have also been swelled by hundreds of thousands since it resoundingly lost May's election to David Cameron's Conservatives.

The winner of the contest will be announced on Saturday.

UN reports child mortality down 50% from 1990, but misses targets

Child mortality rates have dropped 50% from 1990 figures, according to
a report released on Wednesday by UNICEF- the United Nations
Children's Fund.

But that still doesn't meet the UN's target to achieve a two-thirds
reduction in child deaths.

US investigators head to Las Vegas after British Airways 777 fire

Three US government investigators are heading to Las Vegas to find out what caused the fire that led to the evacuation of a British Airways 777.


An engine on the plane burst into flames, causing the pilot to declare a "Mayday".

REPORTS: Catastrophic' engine failure blamed over Vegas plane blaze

Emergency officials say 14 people have now been released from hospital after a fire broke out on a British Airways plane at Las Vegas' McCarran Airport on Tuesday.

The US Federal Aviation Administration's early assessment shows the plane's left engine caught fire on the London-bound flight.

A Hungarian camerawoman has lost her job after videos emerged of her tripping up Syrian refugees as they fled police on the Serbian border.

US tries to head off Russian military deliveries to Syria

The U.S. military is asking allies to close their airspace to Russian military planes, in hopes of stopping possible weapons deliveries to the Syrian government.

Australia to take in 12,000 extra refugees
