US expands use of drones against Islamic State

The U.S. military and CIA have significantly expanded their use of drone aircraft to hunt down leaders of the Islamic State.

The Washington Post reports the program is aimed at terrorism suspects deemed "high value targets."

Same sex marriage standoff in Kentucky intensifies

Same sex couples in Kentucky are threatening to occupy local government offices after an official there defied the US Supreme Court and refused to issue same sex marriage licenses.

Hungary bans refugee travel as migration crisis escalates

Budapest's main Railway station was shut down on Tuesday after police pushed back 1,000 migrants boarding trains to seek asylum in Germany.

The station was reopened later in the day, but migrants without an EU visa were not allowed to travel.

A spokesman for the Hungarian government said the station was closed in order to uphold EU law which requires refugees to apply for protection in the first country they arrive in.

The EU will hold emergency talks in two weeks to address greater cooperation and a return policy for refugees coming from so-called "safe countries".

Eugenio Ambrosi the EU director for the International Organization for Migration says the classification of what makes a migrant or refugee is a far from simple process.

Main temple in Palmyra destroyed, UN say

According to the United Nations, satellite images confirm the Temple
of Bel has been destroyed in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra.

The ruins are protected as a world heritage site but the
self-proclaimed Islamic State took over Palmyra in May and consider
the monuments to be sacrilegious.

Local clerk defies US Supreme Court order to issue marriage licenses

A local county clerk in Kentucky has defied a direct order from the U.S. Supreme Court to issue marriage licenses to both opposite sex and same sex couples.

UK's EU referendum question could change

The UK's Electoral Commission has recommended changing the question being put to voters in a forthcoming EU referendum...

It says the current phrasing of the question could be perceived as biased.

Hundreds of migrants arrive in Vienna from Hungary

Austria has been seeing the arrival of hundreds of migrants in its capital Vienna with many arriving from Hungary to seek asylum in the EU.

China Punishes People for Spreading Rumors Online

The Chinese Ministry of Public Security says it has punished scores of people in recent days for “spreading rumors” online. 

The so-called rumors were related to China’s continuing stock market uncertainty, the recent industrial explosions in Tianjin and a military parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

One dies, over 100 injured as protests in Ukraine turn violent

One Ukrainian national guard member has been killed and over 100 people were injured in clashes between protesters and police in Kiev.
