North America's tallest mountain renamed

U.S. President Barack Obama is renaming North America's tallest mountain to its original First People's name - Denali.

The Alaska mountain - 20,322 in height - had been called Mount McKinley to honor President William McKinley.

American horror film director Wes Craven, who dreamed up the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, has died at age 76 after a battle with brain cancer. Protests turn violent in Kiev as parliament backs greater autonomy for eastern Ukraine

At least 10 police officers were hurt in clashes between protesters and police in Kiev. Demonstrators tried to break down the fence around parliament as Ukrainian lawmakers gave their initial backing to reforms for greater autonomy for the country's disputed eastern part. French PM calls for deeper unity on EU migration crisis

The French prime minister Manuel Valls has called for greater European Union unity in tackling the ongoing migrants crisis.

His comments came at a press conference at the French port of Calias where a huge camp of refugees has formed as they try to cross reach the UK - either by boat or through the channel tunnel.

An emergency meeting of EU interior ministers has been called for September 14th to tackle to migration crisis with 340 thousand people having been detected crossing the bloc's external border in 2015 already.

Australia's $40 million refugee resettlement deal with Cambodia on verge of collapse

Cambodia has given a "thanks for the money, but no thanks for refugees" message to Australia after the country decalred it was no longer interested in resettling more refugees from Australia's detention centre in Nauru.

Service held for two journalists killed on live TV

Mourners have gathered in Roanoke, Virginia for an interfaith service to remember the two TV journalists shot dead live on television. WDBJ reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward were killed by a former colleague during a live broadcast last Wednesday morning. The station's General Manager Jeffery Marks was among those who paid tribute.

Oliver Sacks, renowned neurologist and author, dead at 82

The neurologist and best-live author Oliver Sacks has died in New York at the age of 82.

He’d been suffering from cancer, and wrote movingly about his struggle with the disease and his impending death earlier this year.

Dr. Sacks was born in Britain, but had lived in the United States since the 1960s.

His writings were widely acclaimed, and his book “Awakenings” was turned into a film starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.

In 2012, talking about his book “Hallucinations”, he spoke about his own experiences with amphetamines and the lessons he learned about the human mind.

New Orleans marks 10 years since Katrina

The mayor of New Orleans is marking the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina by calling on America to address its neglected infrastructure.  

The storm killed nearly 2,000 people and displaced one million. 

It was the most expensive natural disaster in US history and caused destruction along the Gulf coast.

In New Orleans, the failure of the levee system left about 80% of the city under water.

Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation," Mayor Mitch Landrieu [[ LAN-droo ]] said more must be done to improve the nation's crumbling infrastructure.

Pres. Obama addresses Jewish Americans on Iran nuclear deal

U.S. President Barack Obama said the Iran nuclear deal will stop Tehran from developing an atomic weapon.

Mr Obama made the assertion during a webcast event with major Jewish organisations.

Clinton addresses Benghazi, email scandal

Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton said she's ready and eager to testify before committee on the 2012 attack on an American compound at Benghazi. 

Taking questions from reporters while on the campaign trail, Ms. Clinton said she hopes Congress can stop "politicizing" the tragedy at Benghazi, where a US ambassador was killed, and work on making sure the event never happens again.

She also address the email scandal about her using a private server while serving as Secretary of State, insisting no wrongdoing was committed.

Hillary Clinton said she's not frustrated the issue keeps coming up.

UN Refugee Agency: More than 300,000 migrants crossed Mediterranean this year

More than 300 thousand refugees have crossed the Mediterranean sea so far this year, and more than two thousand have died, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.

The latest U-N figures come as boats carrying 500 migrants sank off the coast of Libya on Thursday.

U.S. teenager sentenced to 11 years in jail over support to ISIS

An American teenager from Virginia has been sentenced to 11 years in jail for helping another teen travel to Syria and join ISIS.

Seventeen-year-old Ali Shukri Amin, from the northern Virginia town of Manassas, pled guilty in June to conspiracy, and providing support to terrorists.

Gun control, mental health resources in question following Virginia shooting
