US President Jimmy Carter speaks openly about brain cancer diagnosis

Former US President Jimmy Carter has spoken publicly about his health for the first time since his recent cancer diagnosis.

He told a packed press conference that following a biopsy on his liver, doctors discovered the cancer had spread to his brain.

Speaking at the headquarters of the not-for-profit organization The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, The 90-year old appeared optimistic as he detailed the treatment he would undergo immediately.

UN Expert Slams China's Lack of Transparency After Tianjin Disaster

The United Nations top expert on human rights and hazardous materials
criticized China for a lack of transparency after the Tianjin
explosion last week. UN Special Rapporteur Baskut Tuncak suggested
more timely information from officials could have prevented the blast
which killed more than 114 people at a warehouse storing hazardous
chemicals.

Jimmy Carter discloses brain cancer diagnosis, will begin immediate treatment

The former US President Jimmy Carter says cancer has spread to his brain, and he's beginning immediate radiation treatments in a bid to overcome it.


But he told reporters that he expects the disease could spread further, and called himself "perfectly at ease with whatever comes".

New security measures for Calais announced

The UK and France have agreed a raft of new measures to tackle the growing migrant crisis in the French town of Calais...

A new command and control centre will be set up, jointly run by French and British police officers, aimed at clamping down on criminal gangs smuggling migrants into the UK. 

Extra fencing, CCTV and infrared technology will be rolled out - as well as an increase in police and 24/7 freight checks.

Police deploy tear gas and arrest 9 in St Louis protest

Police have arrested at least nine people and deployed tear gas in the US city of St. Louis, Missouri during protests following the death of a black 18-year-old who was shot by police after he pointed a gun at them.
Police say the suspect, in his early 20s, was fleeing from officers serving a search warrant in a crime-ridden neighbourhood.

Greece due its first slice of bailout cash

Athens is due to receive ( / has received ) the first tranche of its rescue fund from eurozone countries on Thursday morning.

After successful votes and intense debates on the bailout in The Netherlands and Germany, Greece will use the initial 13 billion euros in aid to help repay loans including a 3 billion euro bill to the European Central Bank this week.

Iran allowed to inspect its own alleged nuclear sites

In an unusual arrangement agreed to by the United Nation's
International Atomic Energy Agency- Iran will be allowed to use its
own experts to investigate a site allegedly used to develop nuclear
weapons.

This is according to documents obtained by the Associated Press and is
likely to evoke a strong reaction from critics of the July 14 nuclear
deal.

Evidence of the Plague Found at Yosemite National Park

U.S. health officials have closed two campgrounds at Yosemite National Park in California, after finding evidence of the plague. 

Two recent visitors to the park have been diagnosed with the plague, and the park service has found the carcasses of two squirrels that died of the disease.

UN reports new rape allegations by peacekeepers in CAR

New allegations of rape by United Nations peacekeepers, again involving the organization's "blue helmets" deployed to the Central African Republic.

US condemns ISIS-execution of 83-year old archaeologist

An expert on antiquities in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra is the latest victim of an ISIS execution.

The extremist group beheaded Kalid al-Asaad in the city's public square yesterday.

The 83 year old was a university professor and the former general manager for antiquities and museums in the city.

Chelsea Manning disciplined for Caitlyn Jenner magazine

US Army whistleblower Private Chelsea Manning has been banned from recreational activities at a military prison after she was found guilty of violating prison rules.
