South Carolina gov calls for confederate flag removal

The governor of the US state of South Carolina has joined a diverse group of voices in calling for the removal of the Confederate Flag from state capital grounds.

Republican governor Nikki Haley says it's a symbol of the state's past - not its future.

Controversy has been growing over its prominent placement in the wake of last week's shooting at the Emanuel AME church in Charleston, where white 21 year old Dylann Roof allegedly shot and killed nine African-American victims.

The flag represented the US South during the Civil War and while to some it shows tradition and regional pride, to others it's a symbol of racial oppression.

South Carolina governor Nikki Haley says she understands both views.
