3300 confirmed dead after Nepal earthquake

Over 3300 people are now confirmed dead after the earthquake which hit Nepal on Saturday.

Nepal's National Emergency Operation Centre says more than 6500 people have been injured.

The 7.8 magnitude quake caused serious damage to the capital Kathmandu.

But aid agencies warn the scale of the crisis in remote mountainous areas is still not yet clear.

Tens of thousands are sheltering in tents in Kathmandu and surrounding areas.

Kazakh President wins fifth consecutive five year term in criticised election

Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev has won an election with 97.7% of the vote, early state results say.


The result will give Mr Nazarbayev his fifth consecutive five year term in office.

Batman shooter trial set to begin

Opening arguments are set to begin on Monday in the Batman shooter trial in the U.S. state of Colorado.

The trial comes over two-and-a-half years after a gunmen walked into a midnight premiere of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises and opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring 70.

US mulls changes to ransom policy

The Obama administration is considering significant changes to its policy on never providing ransoms to kidnappers

The reconsideration comes after it was learned American Warren Weinstein was killed in a drone missile strike in northern Pakistan and three years ago his family had paid $250000 in an attempt to win his release

Nigeria recalls South African ambassador after xenophobic attacks

INTRO:  South Africa's foreign ministry has criticized Nigeria's decision to recall its ambassador back to Abuja. The Nigerian government cites the lack of action by the South African government against attacks on African nationals as the reason for the recall. At least seven people were killed in two cities in South Africa earlier this month, when locals attacked foreign nationals. Russian hackers "read Obama's E-mail"

Russian computer hackers are reported to have accessed President Obama's unclassified e-mail.


The New York Times reports a security breach last year was far more intrusive than the US government had previously disclosed.

Japanese PM Arrives in US For Week Long Visit

Angelina Jolie slams UN over inaction in Syria, appeals for more help for refugees

Angela Jolie on Friday appealed to the United Nations Security Council to do more to help Syrian refugees.


But the UN Refugee Agency's Special Envoy, who was addressing the council in a special session Friday, also criticized the international community over its divisions and indecision in dealing with the crisis.

Native Americans walk-off Adam Sandler film protesting 'offensive stereotypes'

Actor and comedian Adam Sandler has been accused of causing offense to the Native American culture.

American drone strikes under international scrutiny

The United States is coming under mounting pressure over its use of military drones, following the admission that it accidentally killed two western hostages on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

American Warren Weinstein and Italian Giovanni Lo Porto were killed during a strike on a suspected al-Qaeda compound, but as John Clarke reports from Washington DC, critics of drones say the tragedy shows America doesn't really know who it's killing.

Foiled terror attack on The Vatican revealed

Italian authorities have arrested 9 islamic extremists who've been linked to recent bombings in a Pakistani market… but have also revealed the suspects also planned an attack on The Vatican back in 2010.

SERVICES IN ARMENIA AND TURKEY MARK MASS KILLINGS AND GALLIPOLI

Armenia has been marking the 100th anniversary of the start of mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks.

The country says as many as 1.5 million Armenian Christians were killed.

Turkey disputes that number and also objects to the killings being described as 'genocide'.

The French and Russian Presidents have been in Armenia's capital Yerevan for the commemorations.

Turkey, meanwhile, has been hosting events to mark the start of the Battle of Gallipoli during World War One, 100 years ago.

The Gallipoli campaign led to over 100 000 allied deaths - including about 10 000 from New Zealand and Australian forces.

Britain's Prince Charles is attending Gallipoli events in Turkey along with dignitaries from Australia, New Zealand and Turkey.

Luxembourg court charges journalist over LuxLeaks scandal

A court in Luxembourg has charged a journalist for leaking documents which implicated the country in a tax-rate fixing scandal know as LuxLeaks.

It centred around around 28 thousand documents which showed Luxembourg allowed companies like Ikea, Deutsche Bank and Apple to pay very small amounts of tax in order to attract them to set up base in the EU country.
