Iceland retracts bid to become an EU member

Iceland has cancelled its bid to become a European Union member state.

The island nation in the North Atlantic sea is six years into the process but is now turning its back on joining the 28 country bloc.

Greece's Tsipras makes plea to EU partners for solidarity

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has been in Brussels to speak to the EU's Commission President Jean Claude Juncker about ongoing negotiations to give Greece a 4 month bailout extension. 

Athens and eurozone creditors remain locked in talks over which reforms Greece will have to carry out before the country completes its financial review and is able to receive much needed aid.

PUTIN'S HEALTH IS BEING QUESTIONED

Concerns are raised about the Russian President's health who hasn't been seen in public since a meeting and press conference with the Italian prime minister, Matteo Renzi, on 5 March, where he appeared healthy. A string of cancelled meetings this week lead journalists to believe that Vladimir Putin May be unwell.

Judge dismisses Pistorius application against appeal

IN: Convicted South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has lost a court bid to prevent the State from taking his conviction of culpable homicide to the Appeals Court. Pistorius is currently serving a 5 year prison sentence for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The State argues the athlete should have been found guilty of murder. Iraqi officials say troops are advancing into the city of Tikrit from several directions.

Islamic State fighters have reportedly fallen back into the city centre.

UK POLICE NOT DISCIPLINED OVER ABUSE SCANDAL

Greater Manchester Police are under fire in the UK after deciding no officers will face any misconduct proceedings despite admitting failures over a major child sexual abuse scandal.

A report by the police force says sexual abuse in the town of Rochdale should have been investigated more thoroughly, and outlines a catalogue of failures.

It suggests police were 'distracted' by trying to hit targets related to burglary and other crimes.

In 2012 a gang of nine men of Pakistani and Afghan heritage were jailed over rape, trafficking and child sex abuse offences which affected dozens of vulnerable young girls in Rochdale.

And local MP Simon Danczuk says the report isn't good enough.

Brothers plead guilty in NYC terror bomb plot

Two Pakistani-born brothers have appeared in court in Miami charged with planning to carry out a terrorist attack in New York.

El Salvadoran official loses appeal to stay in U.S.

The Board of Immigration Appeals has upheld the deportation order of a former El Salvador official implicated in the torture and death of thousands of people during the country's civil war.

The ruling against Former Defense Minister Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova is seen as precedent-setting as it's the first time the nation's highest immigration court has enforced a law passed in 2004 that allows the deportation of US residents if they had committed human rights atrocities prior to their  arrival in this country.

21 human rights groups call out UN Security Council for "failing Syria"

The United Nation's most powerful arm has come under fire for failing Syria.

Holder Speaks Out Against Ferguson Police Shooting

The US Attorney General Eric Holder has called the shooting of two police officers in Ferguson, Missouri as a 'disgusting and cowardly' attack. 

His words came as the two policemen were released from hospital, after suffering gunshot wounds in the worst outbreak of violence since protests erupted in the St. Louis suburb last summer.  

One of the officers was shot just below the eye, the other in the shoulder.

Ferguson officers released from hospital following gunshot wounds


INTRO:

Two Ferguson policeman have been released from hospital after suffering gunshot wounds in the worst outbreak of violence since protests erupted in the St. Louis suburb last summer.  

One of the officers was shot just below the eye the other in the shoulder.

It happened overnight when gunfire broke out during protests outside the Ferguson Police Department.

Boris Nemtsov's Daughter Says Putin Is to Blame

A daughter of Russia's opposition leader Boris Nemtsov says that Russian president Vladimir Putin must bear "political" responsibility for her father's murder. Cuba and the United States re-establish direct phone link


For the first time in 15 years, Cuba and the United States have re-established direct telephone links.

Retail sales fall 0.6% in the United States

Retail sales in the United States fell 0.6% in February falling way
short of Wall Street estimates.

It's the third straight month of declines with analysts largely
blaming oil prices and the harsh winter weather.

"Foreign spy" arrested over UK Syria girls

The Turkish government says a "foreign spy" has been arrested for allegedly helping three British school girls cross the border into Syria to join Islamic State…
