Greece talks fail after Athens rejects bailout extension

Talks in Brussels over Greece's debt crisis reached a deadlock on Monday after Greece rejected an offer to extend its bailout but under the same austerity conditions.

Officials from Eurogroup meeting of eurozone finance ministers as well as the European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund now say it's up to Athens to take the deal before its 240 billion euro loan runs out in March.

Greece's leftist government swept to power last month on the promise of ending its loan program and accompanying austerity measures which have crippled the country's economy and driven unemployment.

But eurozone creditors say Greece must abide by the same rules for financial assistance that were handed to countries like Portugal and Ireland who faced similar debt problems after Europe's financial crisis.

Speaking after the meeting Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said his team was unable to accept a preliminary deal that continued a program he said has not worked for his country.

Eurozone Finance ministers continue Greece bailout talks, work towards compromise

Eurozone Finance ministers are meeting in Brussels to make progress in debt talks with Greece, whose government has refused to accept further austerity measures that would accompany an extension to its 240 billion euro bailout program which ends in March.

Today's meeting comes after an extraordinary session last Thursday which failed to reach a compromise with euro countries reluctant to relax conditions for Greece.

Walking into the meeting German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said he was skeptical a deal would be reached on Monday considering talks over the weekend with the European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund also failed to reach common ground.

Irish Finance Minister Michael Noonan said he was eager to understand Greece's specific requests.

Greece crisis talks: An Interview with Syriza's top economist

Officials involved in crisis talks between Greece and international creditors say slow progress is being on a deal to save Greece from leaving the eurozone when its bailout expires in March.

Monday crunch talks in Brussels between euro area finance ministers are trying to reconcile the demands of Greece's new leftist government for a 6 month extension but with fewer austerity measures...

The Eurozone's biggest lender Germany has been the most vocally opposed to bending the rules, though countries like France and Italy have expressed support for so-called 'bridge financing' while all sides work out a longer-term plan.

Greece has more than 320 billion euros in debt, mostly in the form of bailout loans from the euro area and the International Monetary Fund.

A pledge to write down half the country's debt helped Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his anti-austerity Syriza party win last month's elections in Greece, but have already had to water down their demands after stark opposition from eurozone countries.

Tsipras told a German magazine over the weekend that Monday's talks would be difficult, but that he was confident all sides would find an agreement.

That optimism was shared by John Milios, the chief economist of his leftist party Syriza, who spoke to our correspondent Sandra Gathmann ahead of the meeting.
