North Korea to skip landmark UN meeting

North Korea has announced it won't attend a Security Council meeting
at the United Nations where the country's human rights record will be
discussed.

A majority of the Security Council members wanted the issue placed on
the agenda saying these human rights violations could have a
destabilizing impact on the region.

China investigates North Korea hacking of Sony Pictures


China has been dragged into the row between the United States and North Korea over a cyber-attack on Sony's computer systems. 

Sony cancelled the release of the film The Interview, which is about an assassination attempt on North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, following threats of violence against the company and movie theaters.

Financial 'riggers' to face up to seven years in prison

The UK's Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has announced that the rigging of foreign exchange rates and certain other financial benchmarks will become a criminal offence.


The crime will carry a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and comes after scandals involving the rigging rates such as Libor, the London Interbank Offered Rate.

FATALITIES CONFIRMED IN GLASGOW LORRY CRASH

Several people have been killed after a bin lorry crashed into them in the Scottish city of Glasgow.

Police say there are also a number of injuries following the incident.

The driver of the lorry has been taken to hospital - eyewitnesses reported seeing him slumped at the wheel of the vehicle as it moved at speed through a busy street in central Glasgow.

The crash is being described as a road traffic accident which doesn't appear to have been deliberate.

A police spokesman at the scene says the lorry was involved in more than one collision.

UK research says IMF cuts could be responsible for Ebola spread

UK researchers say spending cuts imposed by the International Monetary Fund may have contributed to the spread of Ebola in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.


The study explains that healthcare systems were weakened by underfunding which lead to poor staffing ill prepared health systems.

Killer boasted before killing two New York policemen

The man who shot and killed two New York police officers boasted about
his plan in the moments before the attack.

Police say Ismaaiyl Brinsley told bystanders "watch what I'm going to
do" before shooting the officers as they sat in their patrol car.

China willing to help Russia's economy amid crisis

China is prepared to help Russia's economy if necessary, but believes Russia has the "wisdom" to overcome its economic difficulties.

That's according to statements from China's Foreign Minister published in a Chinese state newspaper on Monday.

Russia is facing severe economic difficulties, with the rouble having lost around half its value this year against the dollar, and a recession expected to begin in the next few months.

US asks for help from China on North Korea cyberattacks

The Obama administration has asked China for help in addressing the cyberattacks by North Korea - which are tied to the movie "The Interview."

North Korea has denied it is behind the original hacking but has now issued a statement pledging its toughest counteractions against the cesspool that is the US government.

President Obama says he's considering officially designating North Korea a "state sponsor of terrorism" following the cyber attack on the headquarters of Sony Pictures.

Two New York police officers "assassinated"

New York's Police Commissioner says two officers shot dead while they
were sitting in their patrol car were "assassinated".

Police are investigating whether the gunman, who later killed himself,

A war of words has broken out between President Obama and the head of Sony Pictures over the company's decision to shelve a new comedy film after a cyber attack on its headquarters.


The White House says the North Koreans were responsible for breaking into Sony's mainframe, and then threatening to attack any American cinema that went ahead and showed "The Interview", a new comedy about an attempt to assassinate Kim Jong Un.

Calls for continued support for Ebola fight

United Nations Secretary-General Ban says he is cautiously optimisic that the Ebola epidemic can be brought under control, and in a trip to the region, reiterated the UN's commitment to helping the people of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

But with the death of Sierre Leone's top doctor from the virus, many are reiterating that more resources are needed to stop the disease which has already killed 7300.
