553 killed in Syria by US air strikes against IS

UK activists say American-led air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria have killed 553 people since September...

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 32 civilians are among those deaths.

Tesco's Chairman to step down

The chairman of supermarket chain Tesco has announced he will be stepping down.


It comes after an investigation into the company's accounting practices revealed it overstated its first half profits by 263 million pounds (421 million dollars).

European leaders are gathering in Brussels to try to reach a difficult compromise on climate and energy targets.

Canada's Prime Minister says the country will not be intimidated after a terrorist attack near parliament in Ottawa.

A gunman killed a Canadian soldier at a nearby war memorial before being shot dead inside parliament.

The gunman has been identified as a Muslim convert in his early 30s called Michael Zehaf-Bibeau - who had recently had his passport taken away because of suspected jihadist sympathies.

PM Harper: Canada not intimidated by shooting

Canada's Prime Minister says that the shooting of a solider near the national parliament in Ottawa is a reminder that the country is "not immune to terrorist attacks".

The gunman, who was later shot dead by police, has been identified by Canadian security sources as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a recent convert to Islam.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued this statement.

Force could be used by Sweden in hunt for mystery 'submarine'

Sweden could use force in its ongoing hunt for what may be a foreign submarine, a naval officer has told the BBC.


If, as some suspect, a, "lurking," submerged submarine refused to surface, weapons might be used to make it do so.

US shocked by shooting at Canadian parliament - Pres. Obama

U.S. President Barack Obama is offering Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper whatever help he needs after the shocking shooting in Ottawa.

Canadian officials are confirming, the shooter is dead and his name is Michael Zehaf-Bibeau.

US cooperating with Canada on Parliament shooting investigation

U.S. President Barack Obama has called Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to offer help and condolences following the shooting of a soldier outside the Canadian Parliament.

With three people reportedly injured and the shooter dead, a full investigation is underway into who was behind this apparent act of terrorism.

Five US Airports Begin New Ebola Screening Measures

Four passengers who flew into Washington's Dulles Airport have been taken to hospital following the implementation of advanced screening for Ebola.

Travellers from the three Ebola-hit nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea are now obliged to filter through just five airports.

Along with Washington, the five include New Jersey, New York, Atlanta and Chicago.

The United States is offering assistance to Canada after a series of shootings at or close to the Canadian parliament building in Ottawa.

Pentagon investigates 'bungled weapons drop' after militant-video of munitions haul

The Pentagon is investigating claims that a missing weapons airdrop in northern Syria has fallen into enemy hands.

It follows the release of a video purporting to show the weapons in the control of so-called Islamic State extremists.

The footage shows a man sifting through open boxes containing both old and new munitions.
