US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned on Monday evening after months of clashes with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, with US President Donald Trump accepting the resignation the same night.
Driscoll — the youngest Army secretary in US history and a close ally of Vice President JD Vance — is reported to have raised concerns that Hegseth was undermining Army readiness by firing generals responsible for modernisation efforts.
The departure leaves the Army without both its top civilian leader and its chief of staff, with the war with Iran now in its sixth month.
