Israel has retaliated against a coordinated Western trade ban on goods from illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank by closing the British consulate in Jerusalem and barring 12 British lawmakers from entering the country.
The United Kingdom, France and Canada announced the sanctions on Monday as part of a 12-country effort. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told the House of Commons that ethnic cleansing of Palestinians was being carried out by what he called settler terrorists.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot warned the West Bank was on the brink of explosion and urged other European Union member states to follow suit.
