The United States Central Command struck three Iranian crude oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, in retaliation for Iranian attacks on US-linked vessels — the latest escalation in the war between the US-Israeli coalition and Iran.
Tehran has vowed what it called a more painful response, while attention has also turned to a reported deal between Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz — a waterway through which roughly a third of the world's oil and gas normally passes.
Washington sees the deal not as a step towards negotiations, but as an attempt by Tehran to assert control over the strategic waterway.
