US President Donald Trump has accused Canada of wanting the benefits of statehood without becoming one, escalating a trade war after Washington imposed 50 per cent tariffs on roughly 20 billion dollars' worth of Canadian goods.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced retaliatory tariffs on American steel, dairy and electronics, set to take effect on the eighth of September, saying Canada had been "attacked."
The White House says Ottawa rejected a deal that was in its favour, but Canadian officials say last-minute changes made the agreement unacceptable.
