Meta has agreed to pay as much as 18 billion dollars to settle a landmark child-safety lawsuit brought by 29 US states, in a deal that would impose sweeping new restrictions on how teenagers use Facebook and Instagram.
The proposed settlement, filed in federal court in Oakland, California on Wednesday, still requires the approval of the presiding judge before it takes effect.
As part of the agreement, Meta has publicly called on YouTube and TikTok to adopt similar protections and join the deal.
