Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs of up to fifty per cent on nearly twenty billion dollars' worth of American goods, effective the eighth of September, in a dollar-for-dollar response to new duties imposed by Washington.
Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne says the countermeasures will target steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment and electronics, with Ottawa also unveiling billions of dollars in support for affected workers and businesses.
Wall Street's early reaction, however, has been muted, with the major indices edging higher on Tuesday despite the escalating trade dispute.
