The leader of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces has ordered his commanders to go on the offensive, declaring his fighters "unleashed" after the Sudanese army recaptured several key towns in North Kordofan state and seized control of the strategic road linking Khartoum to El Obeid.
Army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan visited forward positions in the recaptured areas on Monday, as allied forces said they had destroyed or captured more than a hundred RSF combat vehicles during the weekend's operations.
The gains mark a significant shift in the war's main theatre, after the army lost much of Darfur with the fall of El Fasher last year.
