US President Donald Trump has arrived in the Turkish capital Ankara for the NATO summit, where alliance members are under pressure to show they are increasing defence spending toward the five per cent of GDP target agreed last year.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says member states have invested more than 280 billion dollars in additional military spending over the past year, but says there is still a long way to go.
The summit's opening day has focused on converting that investment into real military capability, as Washington signals it wants European allies to shoulder more of the burden.
